Dubai to Welcome Vegas-Style Island Featuring MGM, Bellagio, and Aria Hotels
Dubai is set to add another world-class destination to its hospitality and tourism portfolio: The Island, a Vegas-style megaproject located off the coast of Jumeirah. Developed by Wasl, this ambitious waterfront development will become home to three of Las Vegas' most iconic hotel brands — MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria.
The project, originally announced in 2017, recently saw major progress with the awarding of its construction contract. According to MEED, Wasl has appointed China State Construction Engineering Corporation to carry out the development in a deal estimated at $1.2 billion (Dhs 4.4 billion), making it the largest construction contract awarded in Dubai since 2017.
Set against the backdrop of Dubai’s glittering coastline near the Burj Al Arab, The Island will span 3.5 million square meters and include a 1,400-room luxury hospitality offering. The hotels will be operated by MGM Resorts International, adding a touch of Las Vegas glamour to Dubai’s luxury landscape.
In MGM’s earnings call on November 8, 2023, President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle confirmed that the project is already under construction. He also shared new details, highlighting that The Island will feature upscale accommodations under the MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria banners — each bringing its distinct style and legacy to Dubai.
- Bellagio: Inspired by Mediterranean elegance and famous for its Las Vegas lakefront fountain show and Cirque du Soleil’s aquatic performance.
- Aria: Known for upscale dining experiences and modern luxury, with top-tier restaurants like Jean-Georges Steakhouse and Carbone.
- MGM Grand: The iconic party destination, famed for celebrity events, nightlife, and extravagant pool parties.
Will The Island Feature a Casino?
While no official statement has been made about casino operations on The Island, the conversation is gaining momentum. In 2023, the UAE established the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), aiming to lay down the framework for potential national lottery and commercial gaming activities.
With Ras Al Khaimah’s Wynn Resort already confirmed to include a casino by 2027, there is speculation that Dubai could follow suit. MGM’s Hornbuckle acknowledged the potential, stating that if gaming were legalized in the UAE and Dubai, The Island would be in a prime position to include a world-class gaming experience.
“We believe they have the best gaming hospitality brands in the world with the best location in Dubai, and our existing project could include a world-class gaming component, if approved,” Hornbuckle said.
